The national standard Essential Requirements for the Safety of Hydrogen Systems, which was prepared with the participation of Censtar H2e, will be implemented soon


Recently, the national standard GB/T 29729-2022 Essential Requirements for the Safety of Hydrogen Systems prepared with the participation of Censtar H2e will be implemented on April 1, 2023, which will completely replace the GBT29729-2013 version.


This standard was published by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Standardization Administration of China, and proposed by and under the centralized management of the National Technical Committee on Hydrogen Energy of Standardization Administration of China. Censtar H2e has contributed its "wisdom" and "experience" in the preparation, and also contributed to further standardizing the safe development of the hydrogen energy industry.

This standard is applicable to the design and use of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and application systems, with 7 chapters in total, specifying the category of hydrogen system, basic characteristics of hydrogen, risk factors of hydrogen system and basic requirements for risk control. The appendix provides typical hydrogen production systems, properties of hydrogen, combustion characteristics of hydrogen and the related information on commonly used metal materials and non-metallic materials in hydrogen environment.


Compared with the 2013 edition, the main changes in the new version of Essential Requirements for the Safety of Hydrogen Systems are as follows: 

1、The terms and definitions of hydrogen partial pressure, stationary hydrogen storage container, liquid hydrogen booster pump, slush hydrogen, orthohydrogen, parahydrogen, regular hydrogen, liquid hydrogen and the oxygen in hydrogen filling station are added;

2、The relevant provisions on hydrogen production system, hydrogen storage system and hydrogen transportation system in the category of hydrogen system are changed;

3、The relevant provisions for hydrogen using systems in the category of hydrogen systems are added;

4、The requirements for hydrogen flame detection are added;

5、The relevant provisions on risk factors related to solid hydrogen storage are changed;

6、The relevant provisions on temperature-related risk factors are added;

7、The relevant provisions on hydrogen suffocation are added;

8、The relevant provisions on ignition sources and detection and alarm devices in the basic principles of risk control are added:

9、The relevant provisions on safety integrity evaluation in the basic requirements for hydrogen system design are added;

10、The relevant provisions on the hydrogen compatibility test of materials and the commonly used materials in hydrogen environment are changed;

11、The relevant provisions on risk control of hydrogen storage containers, liquid hydrogen storage containers, solid hydrogen storage containers, pumps and compressors, liquid hydrogen and slush hydrogen pipelines, safety relief devices, valves and filters are changed;

12、The relevant requirements for flame arresters are added;

13、The relevant regulations on ventilation requirements, venting and torch are changed;

14、The relevant provisions on hydrogen leakage detection alarm are changed;

15、The relevant provisions for preventing accidental mixing of hydrogen/oxygen and eliminating ignition sources are changed.
